Tool comparisons
Profound alternatives: seven options, honestly compared.
What the $99 and $399 tiers actually buy, which alternative fits which team — and where every option on this page falls short, including ours.
Updated 2026-08-11 · Prices and data verified 2026-08-11
The right Profound alternative depends on why you're leaving. Profound's $99 Starter watches one engine (ChatGPT); the $399 Growth tier watches three; nearly everything that actson the data sits behind an enterprise sales call. If that gate is your problem, the alternatives split into two camps: cheaper monitoring — Otterly, Rankscale, Trakkr, Peec, Semrush's toolkit, AthenaHQ — and software that does the work the dashboards describe, which is where our own product competes. This page compares all seven, and says plainly when staying with Profound is the better call.
What Profound gates, tier by tier
“Profound alternatives” is a busy search not because Profound is a weak product but because of how its ladder is built. Enterprise AI-visibility platform with an agentic content layer (Agents, Aim), sold demo-first to large brands. The self-serve tiers are the on-ramp; the capabilities the platform is famous for live upstairs:

The engine gate is the part most buyers miss on first read: $99 buys ChatGPT only; $399 buys 3 engines. Gemini, Copilot, Claude, Grok, Meta AI, DeepSeek, and Google AI Mode all require a custom enterprise contract. On execution, the pattern repeats. Per Profound's published materials: Agents research, brief, and draft content with a per-run human approval step, pushing to Webflow, WordPress, Sanity, and Contentful — credit-metered, with the full agent surface (Workflows, Content suite, Aim, Agent Analytics) enterprise-only. No Squarespace or Wix integration and no IndexNow submission found in public materials.
There is no hands-on way to test any of this before buying — No free trial at any tier; demo-gated.One further wrinkle: a competitor teardown reports that Profound's pricing page went demo-led in July 2026, while several other sources — including indexed snippets of the pricing page itself — still corroborate the $99/$399 ladder. We keep both claims visible, with sources, in the full Profound pricing teardown.
Which leaver are you? Three exits, three answers
Almost every page ranking for this query jumps straight to a table of cheaper trackers. That skips the step that decides everything: what broke for you.
Exit 1: priced out of coverage. You wanted more engines or more prompts than the self-serve tiers allow, and the enterprise quote wasn't built for you. You want monitoring for less — options one through six below, compared vendor by vendor in our tool pricing table as well.
Exit 2: you run an agency. The published self-serve tiers list one and three seats, API and SSO appear only in the Enterprise column, and white-label client portals don't appear anywhere in the published tier descriptions. Agencies need per-client workspaces and client-facing reporting as line items, not as a custom quote — the math is worked through in AEO for agencies.
Exit 3: insight never became output. The dashboard told you where you were missing from AI answers; the answers didn't change, because the acting layer was enterprise-gated and nobody on your team had the hours. Understand this exit before you buy anything, because a cheaper dashboard re-creates it exactly. The doing half of this job has a market price:
$2,000–6,000
per month — what AEO agencies charge to run the doing half: the content, schema, distribution, and follow-through the dashboards only point at
Source: 2026 market research
Every monitoring tool on this page leaves that work on your desk. The honest comparison is tracker + your hours (or a retainer) vs software that carries the work itself.
If none of these exits is yours — the data was fine, the price was approved, the team ramped — you may not need an alternative at all. Skip to when Profound is the right pick. If the buy-vs-hire question is the real one, start with what AEO services actually charge.
The seven alternatives
Ordered from the cheapest way to watch to the option built to do the work. Every price is drawn from the same verified dataset (August 2026); for the whole field sorted by workflow stage instead, see the best AI visibility tools by stage.
1. Otterly.AI — the lowest-cost way to start watching
Bootstrapped Austrian AI-search monitoring tool; budget-priced prompt tracking with per-engine and per-prompt add-ons. The Lite tier at $29/month includes 15 prompts, 4 base engines, 1,000 GEO URL audits/mo; no API or MCP. The next rung is a jump — Standard at $189/month — and engine add-ons stack on top: Extra prompts $99 per 100-pack (Standard+). Engine add-ons per month by tier (Lite/Standard/Premium): Google AI Mode $9/$59/$149, Gemini $9/$59/$149, Claude $29/$109/$439. Cadence honesty from its own documentation: Prompt monitoring runs daily on all plans; link-citation positions and AI Brand Ranking update weekly. Collection is API polling — Otterly's own blog documents that API results differ from what users see in the real ChatGPT/Perplexity UI. Hands-on: 14-day free trial, no credit card.
Who it fits: a solo operator who wants a regular read on AI answers at the lowest sticker in the category and will act on findings personally. The moment broad engine coverage matters, do the add-on math first — it changes the real price quickly. We work it through in Otterly alternatives.
2. Rankscale — the widest engine net, credit-metered
Vienna-based, bootstrapped AI-search visibility tracker with the category's broadest engine coverage (17+) and credit-weighted pricing. The workhorse tier is Pro at $99/month: 1,200 credits, 50 web audits, 25 brand dashboards, unlimited seats, raw export. A $20 Essentials tier exists, but 2026 sources disagree about how many credits it still includes — check the live page before relying on it. Coverage is the pitch: 17+ engines including ChatGPT, Perplexity, Claude, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, DeepSeek, Grok, Copilot, and Mistral, with geo-targeting across 240+ countries; no per-engine add-on fees at any tier. The meter is the catch: Credit weighting per engine query: ChatGPT/Gemini/Perplexity/AI Mode cost 0.25 credits each, DeepSeek 1, Claude 2 — tracking Claude costs 8x the base engines. And on cadence: User-configurable from hourly to monthly, but credit-metered: Rankscale's own guidance is to scan daily for the first two weeks, then drop to weekly 'to save credits.'
Who it fits:engine-coverage maximalists and international brands that want geo-targeted tracking and can manage a credit budget. Its reviewers' own phrase for the ceiling is “diagnosis without execution” — audits and recommendations, with the fixes done manually in your CMS.
3. Trakkr — flat price, all its models
Flat-priced AI visibility tracker for brands and agencies — self-positioned as 'the $100 alternative' to enterprise tools, with all 8 models on every paid plan. Growth at $100/month includes 1 brand, 50 prompts, all 8 models, daily tracking, citations and perception analysis, 25 articles/mo content analysis, exports. Scale at $500/month adds 10 brands, 50 prompts per brand (same per-brand depth as Growth), 100 articles, unlimited seats, API, white-label agency portals. Two structural limits worth knowing: 8 models on every paid plan: ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini, Perplexity, Grok, Meta AI, DeepSeek, Google AI Overviews — notably no Microsoft Copilot in prompt tracking. The 50-prompt-per-brand cap is hard at every price point. On execution: Monitoring plus weekly action playbooks (described by reviewers as directional, not prescriptive); execution is delegated OUT via MCP to the customer's own AI assistant. No CMS integration, no publishing, and no prepared artifacts found in any 2026 source.
Who it fits: budget-certainty buyers allergic to add-on grids, and small agencies that want white-label reporting at $500and will run the execution themselves. One meta-note: Trakkr is also the most prolific publisher of reviews about every other tool on this page — useful teardowns, but a competitor's teardowns, which is why we cross-check its claims against independent sources throughout.
4. Peec AI — the team tracker with the seat policy people like
Berlin-based AI-search analytics platform for marketing teams and SEO agencies; daily prompt tracking with per-engine add-on pricing. Starter at $95/month includes 50 prompts, 3 engines of choice, 1 project, 1 country, daily tracking, unlimited seats. Daily runs on every tier and unlimited seats are the parts reviewers consistently praise, and trying it is easy — 7-day free trial, no credit card; no permanent free plan. Price the two catches before committing. First, the add-on math: Each additional engine beyond the included 3 is a monthly add-on priced by tier: +$35 (Starter), +$85 (Pro), +$165 (Advanced) per model. Second, the ceiling — in the words of its own reviewer consensus: Monitoring only, per its own reviewers' consensus: the Actions feature suggests clustered tasks (~4–5 per category per day) but Peec does not write, create, or publish content — no CMS integrations, no publishing workflow, and no AI-referral traffic measurement found in any 2026 source. API is Enterprise-gated.
Who it fits: a marketing team or SEO agency with its own content muscle that needs clean daily eyes across markets — hands stay yours. The full add-on arithmetic, including what three engines plus two add-ons really costs, is in Peec AI alternatives.
5. Semrush AI Visibility Toolkit — for teams already in Semrush
If your team already lives in Semrush, the AI Visibility Toolkit is the lowest-friction door: AI-answer data next to the rank tracking you already pay for, with no new vendor. Our field notes on it read: “Monitors only: $99/mo per domain for 25 prompts across 3 engines; reviewers note the 'Growth Actions' execution feature was still listed as coming soon. No content generation or CMS publishing in the toolkit.”
Who it fits: existing Semrush shops that want a first look at AI visibility inside a familiar login. Watch the per-domain pricing if you run several properties, and the small prompt allowance if your market has many buyer questions.
6. AthenaHQ — the tracker that gets closest to acting
Y Combinator-backed GEO platform founded by ex-Google Search PMs; credit-metered self-serve tracking plus recommendation and content agents. The entry tier runs $295/month ($270/mo billed annually; discounted $95 first month renews at $295.) with 3,500 credits/mo (one source says 3,600); 1 credit = 1 AI response analyzed; single language and region. Coverage is a genuine strength: 8 surfaces on self-serve plans: ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, Google AI Overviews, Google AI Mode, Claude, Copilot, Grok — the broadest self-serve coverage among the six vendors here. The credit meter is the documented catch: Cadence is credit-constrained rather than fixed: reviewers calculate 50 prompts x 5 engines daily ≈ 7,500 credits/mo against 3,500 included on Lite, so daily multi-engine tracking exceeds the entry allowance. Also: $100 per 1,250 extra credits; monitoring and the Ask Athena agent draw from the same credit pool — reviewers report surprise overages. On execution it goes further than any tracker above: The closest self-serve rival to an execution loop: Action Center recommendations, ACE citation-probability scoring, and content agents that rewrite pages — publishing to Webflow and Framer only (no WordPress, Squarespace, or Wix path found, no IndexNow). Reviewers report the stronger recommendation and citation engines are enterprise-gated, and drafts stop short of an autonomous prepared-artifact queue.
Who it fits: teams on Webflow or Framer that want recommendations and drafts one step past monitoring and can budget credits with eyes open. Note the trial situation: No free tier and no true free trial — a discounted $95 first month only.
7. AEO Action — the option built around doing the work (ours)
Disclosure: AEO Action is our product. We built it for exit three above — the reader for whom the first six entries, good as they are at watching, re-create the original problem. Weigh this entry with that bias in mind.
The shape of the product is an answer to exit three's question: who does the work. Daily scans ask the questions your buyers actually ask — regenerated from your business profile, not a static list — across up to six AI engines (ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity, Google AI Overviews, Microsoft Copilot, and Claude, with Claude read in a labeled model mode rather than live capture). Each day an orchestrator picks the single highest-value move the scan surfaced and prepares the full artifact — schema, an FAQ page, a landing page, or a Reddit pack — into an approve queue; nothing publishes without your approval. Everything downstream of that approval — the per-CMS publishing paths, IndexNow submission, and the dated shipped-to-cited receipt kept for approved landing pages — is traced step by step in AEO Action vs Profound.
Pricing: Solo at $149/month (50 prompts daily across three engines you pick), Solo Pro at $299/month (100 prompts, four engines of the six including Claude and Copilot), Agency at $549/month (10 client projects, all six engines, white-label client portals, REST API). The trial is 7 days with no card, and the free audit before it costs nothing at all.
Where option six above already beats us: if your site runs on Framer, AthenaHQ publishes there and we do not. Writesonic and Gauge also publish, in narrower lanes, and produce articles faster than we try to. Our distinguishing claim is narrower and duller than “we execute”: what happens after the publish — the index submission and the dated receipt — at a price with a number on it. Who it fits:businesses and small agencies that wanted Profound's acting layer without an enterprise contract. Who it doesn't: procurement-driven buyers. If SOC 2, SSO, and panel-scale query data are on the requirements list, we fail it, and the next section is written for you. Detailed disqualifiers are in when not to choose us.
Best for: which of the seven is yours
Seven entries is a shortlist, not a decision. Find the row that describes your shop and take the name at the end of it — five of the six verdicts below point somewhere other than our own product.
- Solo operator, one site, one market, doing the work yourself. Buy Otterly.AI Lite at $29/month, or Trakkr Growth at $100 if you would rather have all its models than the lowest sticker. You are buying eyes; the hands are yours and already free.
- Marketing team with writers, developers, and a process. Buy Peec AI — daily runs on every tier and unlimited seats mean the whole team reads the same data without per-seat math. If you already pay for Semrush, buy nothing new: turn on the AI Visibility Toolkit first and see whether it settles the question.
- International brand tracking many markets and the long tail of engines. Buy Rankscale Pro at $99/month and budget the credits deliberately. Nothing else in this list covers 17+ engines with geo-targeting at a self-serve price.
- Enterprise brand team with an analyst and a procurement checklist. Stay on Profound.SOC 2, SSO, an API, and panel-scale query data are on its Enterprise rung and on nobody else's in this list. Leaving to save money here usually costs more in capability than it saves in subscription.
- Business or small agency with no writing capacity. Buy AEO Action — ours, disclosed — at $149 solo or $549 for 10 clients. The one caveat worth naming: if your site is on Framer, AthenaHQ publishes there and we do not, which may matter more than everything else on this page.
What Profound's reviewers actually say
A fair alternatives page has to report the standing of the thing being replaced, and Profound's is strong:
4.5/5
Profound's seller-level G2 rating, across 1,037 reviews — praised for recommendation quality, feature velocity, and enterprise onboarding
Source: G2, 2026
The recurring complaints are just as consistent, and they map to the tier gate above. The most-quoted G2 review on cost, verbatim:
On complexity, another G2 reviewer compared the platform to “a luxury car that was amazing to drive but had a few buttons and switches you didn't know what to do with” (via Vismore's roundup) — and review aggregations at Scalenut and Vismore describe a data-heavy interface with users reporting a four-to-eight-week ramp before the dashboards feel navigable. On pricing, Geoptie's review calls the $99 tier a funnel toward Growth, and Xseek tells buyers outright to treat $399 as the real entry price.
One thing you won't find here: Reddit quotes. The Reddit sentiment that circulates in alternatives roundups is second-hand, and we could not verify the underlying threads directly — so we left them out rather than launder them.
When Profound is the right pick
Some readers of this page should close it and book the Profound demo. Choose Profound if:
- You're buying at enterprise scale. Its Enterprise tier is where the platform's depth lives: Up to 10 engines, Prompt Volumes, Agent Analytics, Workflows/Content suite, Aim orchestrator, API, SOC 2, SSO. Third parties report real contracts at $2,000–5,000+/mo plus one-time setup fees of $2,500–15,000.
- Procurement is a hard requirement.SOC 2, SSO, and an API appear in Profound's published enterprise scope; none of the six alternatives above matches that procurement posture at a self-serve price.
- You have an operator for it.The same reviews that report a long ramp also describe what's on the other side: the deepest data in the category, moving fast. A team with a dedicated analyst gets value the rest of us would leave on the table.
A 4.5-star rating across a thousand-plus reviews is not an accident — at the scale Profound serves, it is often the correct choice. Our own row-by-row ledger against it, including everything Profound has that we don't, lives at AEO Action vs Profound.
When not to choose AEO Action
The seventh entry is ours, so it owes you the sharpest disclaimer on the page. Do not buy it in any of these situations:
- Your program is measured in thousands of prompts. Our plans track 50 to 100 prompts, and 50per client on Agency. A brand-analytics function that reports on a query panel needs Profound's Enterprise rung; we would be the wrong instrument at any price.
- Nobody will approve anything. Publishing is gated behind human approval by design. If the plan is to buy software and never open it, the queue fills and nothing ships — a tracker would waste less of your money.
- Your clients are on Wix, Shopify, or bespoke stacks. Direct publishing lands on Webflow and Squarespace; WordPress pulls from us via a plugin. Anywhere else, the deliverable is finished HTML and structured data ready to paste. That is genuinely useful and genuinely not a push.
- You need client reports to arrive by email on a schedule. Outbound email is not live in production. For an agency whose whole reporting rhythm is a Monday email, that is a disqualifier this quarter, not a roadmap note.
- You want to pay by card, self-serve, today. Card checkout is not live yet either. Trials take no card, which is the same fact wearing a friendlier face.
- Procurement needs SOC 2 or SSO. Neither exists here. That row belongs to Profound and we will not contest it.
What leaving actually costs
Whichever of the seven you land on, the switch itself has a bill that no pricing page carries:
- You rebuild the prompt set. Every vendor defines a prompt slightly differently — per market, per model, per day — so an export rarely maps one-to-one. Budget an afternoon per brand, and more if you were tracking several locales.
- The trend line breaks. Historical standings stay with the tool that recorded them. Your new vendor starts at zero history, which means the first comparison you can honestly make is a month away. Agencies reporting to clients should overlap the two subscriptions for one cycle rather than explain a gap.
- Contracts decide the date.Annual billing runs to term, and the one-time setup fees third parties report on Profound's Enterprise tier are already spent. Move at renewal.
The recommendation, plainly: enterprise teams with an analyst should stay on Profound; teams that already employ writers should replace it with Peec AI or Trakkr and pocket the difference; and businesses or agencies with nobody to write the pages should stop shopping for trackers and buy execution — ours at $149 to $549 a month, or AthenaHQ if your site lives on Framer.
Whichever of those three you are, the starting point costs nothing: see what the engines say about your business before you buy any tool, ours included.
Cheaper than any tier on this page: the free audit — 30 live queries across ChatGPT, Gemini, and Perplexity, about two to three minutes, no account, no email, no card.
